Retini This is a truly wonderful album - with gorgeous, flowing vocals and sounds of both folk and jazz intertwined. The lyrics are original and poignant about today;s world. The album takes you on a journey across the world and leaves one to imagine how it must feel like to be in each place. Thanks, Maaike for sharing your wonderful music! What’s it like to live in London? You ask me, with a glimmer in your eye You think of double decker buses and red telephone boxes The palace and the change of the guard Benedict Cumberbatch on Baker Street When you’re a tourist That’s all there is to it But when you live there Water’s leaking from the ceiling The boiler’s broken, the shower’s cold And it’s wintertime, we have no heating I lie in bed under a pile of blankets The fire alarm keeps blaring And no-one bats an eye The landlord takes 650 a room But don’t tell HMRC It’s London, London living London, London living I live the dream Here on the 17th floor of a council block To pay the bills I work full time I stare at a screen, I’m not playing guitar And in rush hour I go to my gig I'm on the tube Can you please give me some space?! I came around to make it here And so did everybody else Promoters invite your band to play for free But bring all your friends It’s good exposure It’s London, London living London, London living I live the dream We're oh so Bohemian here in London Town It’s London, London living London, London living I live the dream We're oh so Bohemian here in London It’s London London living London London living I've lived the dream I've seen enough! I’m gonna leave this town behind … and Bristol looks quite nice

So You Think 02:31
So you think that I should get some sun Tone my abs and bum Get my eyebrows done Well, I don’t And you think That I should show more skin Maybe join a gym Get a bit more thin Well, I don’t Should I apply a filter Turn my camera just off kilter And brush away the years and days? Every line is a reminder You can only get a life when you age You think I Should wear my heals more high Act less like a guy That I don’t know DIY Well, I do And you think I should contour my face Buy a razor blade Maybe epilate Why don’t you? Should I take 200 pics Maybe steam my inner bits Buy a photogenic handbag dog? God, I wish I could delete you It’s really hard to know when to #stop Should I apply a filter Turn my camera just off kilter And brush away the years and days? Every line is a reminder You can only get a life when you fricking age! So you think Well, I don’t

Willows rustle on a warm summer’s day The pagoda fades away in the haze A bride poses, a smile on her face With lotus flowers on the lake Tiny dragons on the edge of the roof At the temple, I burn incense for you A buddha laughs inside a cave Near lotus flowers on the lake When their petals fall I will be far away, like the lady in the moon Part of me remains Sipping Dragon Well tea this afternoon Wooden boats leave as the sun slowly sets Under pink skies, trees become silhouettes I say goodbye, to silver waves And lotus flowers on the lake

All of You 02:46
All of you Nat'rally I love All of you From your cheekbones to your toes Your belly button to your nose All of you I am sold I can't even call it My own fault There's no use running away It is in my DNA I love you Most people will seal their love with a pair of rings They need to proclaim their love before their friends I never cared for rituals That includes the nuptials But you did it: You made me change my mind I always said I'd never be the bride So when I told my friends, they were surprised I never cared for rituals That includes the nuptials But you did it: You made me change my mind All of you I can't get enough of All of you From your blue eyes to your quirks From your buttocks to your curls All of you

You talk about Bob like he's a god We agree to disagree He had his day, and Joni was great But she's not the one for me Put that harmonica in its case Unless your name is Stevie Call me old-fashioned But give me Ella and Louis How they sing together Swing together now Ella and Louis Let that crackling record play And I wish they would make them Like Ella and Louis these days Now this is the age computers can sing They come in pretty packaging Boys wearing suits, girls in the nude It's all about the marketing Even Madonna has perfect pitch Cher, who can I believe after this? Call me old-fashioned But give me Ella and Louis How they sing together Swing together now Ella and Louis Let that crackling record play And I wish they would make them Like Ella and Louis these days

The city of light is pitch-black When I walk back to my hotel On 17th Street Through a most surreal Manhattan in the dark No one to walk beside me I am a stranger here Far away from home I am on my own In Manhattan in the dark Shadows loom all around What is that sound I hear? I heave a sigh when I climb the staircase In the first light of morning On the fourth day after the storm I pack my things And make my escape From Manhattan in the dark

My feet stick to the floor Smell of cider in the air Yellow posters on the wall Heroes from the past Toots Thielemans reminding me Your time is going to pass With a wish stuck on his tongue A feeling he knows well The piano player strokes the keys And notices my glance He blushes but he also knows His time is going to pass In a frame above the sink Ella’s singing jazz Feel the ground move up and down I looked deep into the glass But it’s alright because I know My time is going to pass A drunken man from Liverpool Comes to the keyboardist’s defence He says if you miss your bus You can stay with our friend And that is what I did, because you know Our time is going to pass Your time is going to pass

about

Ever since my guitar teacher had me play classic jazz, I've loved the songs made famous by singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Music known as the Great American Songbook. I've listened to and performed those classic songs so often, that writing my own jazz-inspired songs came naturally.

My songs take you to London, for a peak into the life of a musician in 'London Living'. In 'Lotus Flowers on the Lake', we take a walk around the West Lake in the Chinese city Hangzhou, as the pink lotuses are in bloom. We time our trip to New York badly and get caught up in Hurricane Sandy, but manage to make it sound romantic on 'Manhattan in the Dark'. And our feet stick to the floor of The Old Duke in Bristol on a jazz night, on 'Your Time Is Going To Pass.'

This album includes the lead single, 'So You Think', my response to society's expectations of women. To stay young and beautiful. To leave the technical stuff to the guys. I don’t think so! It was picked up by local radio and BBC Radio 6 Music.

"Maaike’s vocal performance is characteristically commanding and appealing" - Trust the Doc
